Vocal Tuning

Autotune and Pitch Correction can often carry negative connotations within the recording artist’s community. However, this stigma is often unwarranted. Some of the best vocalists in the industry use minor pitch correction on the final versions of their mixes to make everything absolutely perfect. Autotune has become a creative effect used on some of the largest songs of the past few decades. For you, it is important to understand the difference between Autotune and Pitch Correction.

Autotune is done automatically, using an effect called “Antares” from Universal Audio and is used on vocals from Future, Drake, and The Weeknd, to Rihanna, T-Pain, and more. Typically, this effect is used to capture that autotune sound popularized by T-Pain, modernized by Kid Cudi, and exploded by Travis Scott, Lil Uzi Vert, The Migos, and many others. These artists use Autotune to give their voice a robot-like effect that I often describe as “slime”. If you want those slimy Young Thug-esque vocals, autotune is the way to go.

On the opposite side of the spectrum is what we call “pitch correction”. Pitch Correction is done manually note by note, and when done correctly, is actually quite “transparent” -- meaning you shouldn’t be able to tell it was not naturally sung that way.

The importance of this differentiation comes in our pricing structure. Autotune is automatic, and just requires a couple of settings. For this reason, it is included in all of our different mixing tiers. However, pitch correction is extensive and time consuming. For this reason, pitch correction is only included in our premium mix tier.
